Landlords are being urged to install working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in their properties, with just days to go until it becomes a legal requirement under new government legislation.
From 1st October, all privately rented homes must have a working smoke alarm installed on each floor of the property and a CO alarm fitted, if solid fuel burning appliances such as log burners and coal fires are present.
Landlords will be responsible for ensuring that all alarms are in full working order at the start of every new tenancy and any landlord found to be breaching the regulations could receive a fine of up to £5,000.
The ACT NOW! awareness campaign led by FireAngel, the UK market leader in smoke and CO alarms, is helping landlords to get to grips with the legislation and do all they can to protect their tenants.
Simon Barrs explains: “It’s only been six months since the new legislation was first announced and many landlords are still unaware of the 1st October deadline for getting smoke and CO alarms installed.
“We’re urging landlords to take steps to make sure their properties are compliant and to also install CO alarms in all homes; not just those with solid fuel burning appliances. Otherwise, tenants are at risk from potentially deadly CO leaks from gas appliances such as boilers and fires, and from appliances in neighbouring properties too.”
